Rejection to be Eve. After watching 'Frankenstein'(1931)

Rejection to be Eve

In the later of the movie Frankenstein, Frankenstein create a female creature toward his knowledge researched by creating a male creature before. Doing his creation, Frankenstein uses Elizabeth’s head as an ingredient of the female creature because his purpose was to resurrect his wife, Elizabeth, that he desperately loved. In the film, this female creature seems like a represent of Eve.

The pair of the male creature and female creature have many common characteristics compare to Adam and Eve. They are not born, created. They are created by same subject. They are only individuals of their own kind. They are naïve in the first time. Especially, the female creature and Eve has same reason of their creation. In man’s need. Eve was created because Adam complained about his loneliness to god. And the male creature did exactly same thing with Adam to Frankenstein. Both Eve and the female creature were created for men, and by man.

The female creature and the male creature, their personalities are very different from each other, which can be considered as masculinity and femininity. This difference appeared well in their birth scene. When the male creature wakes up, he kicks out the resurrect device with such violent and energetic movement. While the female creature’s birth was somehow smooth and calm. What she did first was softly touches male creatures face. And as like the creatures were made by a man, those different and firmed characteristics between gender are things that being made.

Thus, the female creature’s death can be interpreted as a feminism issue. Her death was occurred by committing suicide by herself rather than being a part of any men. And to refuse to be a part of made characteristic of women. She was created as Eve but refused to be Eve. The fact that novel Frankenstein’s writer, Mary Shelly was a feminist may can support this argument. Though there is no existence of the female creature in the novel, it contains feminism issue enough by appearing faulty creature created by only man, to insists women’s importance in the patriarchy era. And it seems the movie Frankenstein was reinterpreted by considering these intend of original work, by the director Kenneth Branagh.
